Tony is a life-long socialist, active in the Labour Party and committed to the area in which we live. He is a retired university Economics lecturer.
We face significant challenges. We need more affordable housing, better local transport and investment in recreation, arts and culture. Many local jobs are in the service economy catering for visitors. Our villages and town are welcoming but there are opportunities for improvement in what we offer to visitors, while protecting and sustaining our unique environment. We need better public transport across Steyning and Upper Beeding, with more frequent and reliable buses, with better connections to the rail network. We need better and safer provision for walkers and cyclists in our communities, in the countryside and along the South Downs way. We have real traffic problems and, as your County Councillor, Tony will work with local businesses, community organisations and our parish and town councils, to introduce traffic measures to improve traffic flow, enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists, together with easier access to local shops, amenities and businesses. In our area, we need affordable homes. Tony supports the policies in the neighbourhood plan and will work to ensure a partnership between our local councils, the National Park, a Land Trust and community groups, which will develop housing for local people. As your county councillor, Tony will support:
- New policies for waste disposal with a maximum of recycling.
- Action to address the climate emergency.
- Active travel and better public transport.
- More affordable housing, while protecting nature and the countryside.
- Community Wealth Building – ensuring that council spending supports local jobs.
Tony will be an active councillor, running frequent and accessible advice sessions.
