The Tories claim the Employment Rights Act will make it harder for businesses to recruit seasonal workers, reducing summer job opportunities for young people. But this is really an attempt to undermine the Act itself. What the Tories call cutting red tape means weaker rights for workers, more power for bad employers, and insecure work becoming the norm. Everyone deserves a contract that reflects the hours they actually work, giving working people the security of a stable income and greater certainty. Trade Union Group Centenary Earlier this month, we celebrated the centenary of the Trade Union Group of Labour MPs with a special reception in Parliament, marking 100 years of championing working people and strengthening the Labour-union link. Durham Miners’ Gala The Durham Miners’ Gala remains one of the most important events in the labour movement calendar, bringing together trade unionists, their families and communities from across the UK to celebrate the history, values and achievements of our movement. Our Chair, Joanne Thomas, General Secretary of Usdaw, joined Andrea Egan, General Secretary of UNISON, and Andy McDonald MP on the platform. In her speech, Joanne spoke about the threat posed by Reform, the need for Labour to deliver for working people, and the importance of trade union values, warning that Reform offers easy answers but does not and never will stand up for working people. |

ASLEF Often when discussing the railways, it is passenger services and passenger experiences that are given the most regard. Whilst those are incredibly important in the building of Great British Railways, there is another section of the railway that needs to be considered – rail freight. Rail freight is central to maintaining and developing the network whilst also key to delivering on the Government’s net zero, house building and infrastructure targets. That’s why ASLEF is calling for:
Expansion of publicly owned rail freight, including in regard to contingency planning, maintenance and renewals. Strengthening of rail freight growth targets. We would ask CLPs to lobby their MP on this topic and ask them to read our campaign pack. https://aslef.org.uk/RailFreightFuture Musicians’ Union The Musicians’ Union is campaigning for a change in the law to strengthen copyright to protect musicians and music creators – and introduce music streaming royalties for non-featured artists at the same time. Non-featured artists currently make £0 from music streaming. Meanwhile, the major labels pocket millions. The Labour Government committed to action if things don’t improve. Any potential legislation on artificial intelligence (AI) presents a historic opportunity to change copyright law, fix music streaming and ensure all musicians get a fair deal.
UNISON UNISON is campaigning to end the exploitation of migrant care workers and ensure everyone working in social care is treated with dignity, fairness and respect. Councils and local authorities have a key role to play by signing the Migrant Care Workers Charter and committing to ethical commissioning and employment practices. For 15 years local authorities have faced brutal austerity cuts, with frontline workers and services facing the brunt. This has to stop. The impact of the cuts can be seen across our communities, when streets cannot be cleaned on time, roads are not gritted, streetlights are dimmed, youth centres and libraries close and housing repairs are delayed. At the same time, council and school workers have faced years of real term pay cuts, reductions in terms and conditions, fewer resources and job losses. But none of this is necessary. Austerity is a political choice and we can see that it has failed. We call on the Labour government to do the right thing and fund local government fairly!
